Morocco: A Land of Enchantment and Inspiration

I recently had the honor of embarking on a transformative journey to Morocco, a country known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes. This wasn't just any trip; it was an opportunity to gather with a group of remarkable Black leaders in design and technology at the Black Design Leadership Retreat, organized by the visionary Ovetta Sampson. The retreat promised a unique blend of cultural immersion, professional growth, and community building, set against the backdrop of the enchanting city of Marrakech.

A Gathering of Visionaries

The retreat brought together 11 influential Black design and tech leaders, each with a unique perspective and wealth of experience. Hosted at Jnane Tamsna, the only Black-woman owned hotel in Morocco, the retreat provided a serene and inspiring environment for our discussions and reflections. The participants included trailblazers across several facets of design across UX, visual design, strategic and org design as well as AI and ML.

Over the course of a week, we delved into critical topics such as healthy leadership, “supertoken-ness,” what it means to show up as yourself in corporate spaces, and the concept of decolonizing the design industry. These discussions were not only enlightening but also deeply empowering in ways that I wasn't full expecting. The level of introspection that took place against the backdrop of this serene, African oasis resonated deeply with me, and gave me a new perspective on my personal responsibilities as a black leader in this industry. The insights gained from this retreat will undoubtedly shape my approach to leadership and my commitment to not only fostering a more inclusive environment but also ensuring that diversity is considered in the way that we build and create products for all users.

Personal Reflections

As I reflect on my time in Morocco, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to be part of such a transformative experience. The retreat was a powerful reminder of the importance of community, the strength of shared purpose, and the endless possibilities that arise when we come together to envision and create a better future.
